The idea for Stekkies began when Jeroen and Sebastiaan started looking for a rental home together. They came up with a smart solution that thousands of people now use every day.

How Stekkies started

Jeroen and Sebastiaan have known each other since they were kids. When they started searching for a place to rent, they quickly ran into a system that was messy and frustrating: outdated listings, incomplete platforms, and very little clarity.

They even paid for an overpriced, sketchy service that only showed listings from one estate agent. There had to be a better way. So, they built a simple script that scanned multiple websites at once. It only worked while Jeroen's computer was on — while he was writing his thesis. But hey, it worked.

Before long, they started finding homes faster than anyone else. Even estate agents began to ask: "How are you finding these so quickly?" That's when they realised: this could help other people too.

For friends & family

Once the first version of Stekkies worked, they decided to share it with friends and family. During the first COVID lockdown, they built a website — with no prior experience — and tested it with 50 people who were actively looking for a home.

Every week, they asked for feedback. Stekkies kept improving, shaped by ideas from real users. Finding a home became more efficient, more transparent, and a lot less stressful.

Stekkies for everyone

Stekkies started in Amsterdam, but it didn't take long for word to spread. People from other cities began asking if it worked there too. So Stekkies expanded — first to places like Groningen, Eindhoven and Maastricht, and then across the rest of the Netherlands.
